Dino Weisz is a German film director, screenwriter, and film producer.

At the age of 17, Dino Weisz left his village in Middle Franconia to finish school at the Lycee Rodin in Paris, and to become a violinist. There, Weisz discovered cinema, bought a mini DV camera, and decided to study film at the University of Paris 8, St Denis.

Weisz graduated in 2010 from the “Hochschule für bildende Künste” in Hamburg with professors Wim Wenders and Gerd Roscher. In seven essay films, Weisz shot portraits of seven locations in eastern Germany. Through an experimental mix of documentary and fictional elements, Weisz attempted to express the “feeling” of a place. “I wanted to convey the feeling I had when I arrived in a place for the first time and walked through the streets without any prior knowledge of the location. The sense of place that you can’t express by reporting pure facts.”

After graduating, Weisz worked in various positions in film, including with Kanwal Sethi as Editor on the documentary “Four Women”, as well as 2nd Unit Director in India on the film “Once Again”.

Weisz won his first awards with his short film “Five Minutes of Friendship”. The film shows the trepidation that two NVA soldiers have for each other during daily patrols on the inner-German border, and the meaning of friendship when one of the friends passes on confidential information to the Stasi.

Weisz’s film Farasha (27 min) was released in 2019. A German soldier with Turkish roots has been smuggled into an asylum house in a small East German town. When he leaves the old hotel, he falls into the clutches of a self-organised vigilante group. In the film, current political events and Weisz’s love of the region collide.

As a freelance writer, Weisz develops fictional material with social relevance.
